1) So far I would like to collect information about the positive and negative effects of a casino on tribal lands. How does it affect the Native and non-native community? Has any progress been made in improving the quality of life on reservations? Has employment rates increased? Those are the categories I would break my research down to. It could be further broken down but I will do that as I research because I know other aspects of this topic will arise.
2) I’m going to start with books because it seems the most time consuming yet there aren’t too many books available on this topic. Then I plan on moving to databases such as CQ Researcher and Opposing Viewpoints. I feel these databases will provide an abundance of information! Then I’m going to work on the surveys and interviews as I will be able to prepare more specific questions from the research I have found up to that point. I also plan on looking up newspaper articles from Native resources as well as magazines. I’m hoping to find ample research from these sources.
3) I don’t necessarily have a deadline but I will constantly be working on gathering information and as long as I can keep everything somewhat organized I know I’ll be just fine. It’s hard for me to give a specific date as something always seems to come up in my single mommy life! As the book states, I’m hoping to work more consistently by making my tasks small and just chipping away at this research project.
What does my research plan look like now?
I believe I just answered that above! My primary resources are going to be interviews with tribal officials and tribal members in the communities that have casinos. I might be able to fit in an “observation” of a casino but I’m not sure how I could work that into my final paper. My secondary resources are going to compliment my primary research on each side of this controversial issue. My deadlines are open as I’m just going to work on this project one day at a time but I also understand that it needs to get done in a timely fashion.
