D#3, HW#9 - Techno-Tip:Using Technology
Discount nail shops. Hmmmmm, I know that I have had my nails done there before but had I known then what I do know I would’ve never stepped foot in there at all! When I was younger I had my nails done for special occasions so it’s not like I had them done regularly. It wasn’t until I was a married woman living overseas that I had my nails done on a regular basis. She eventually inspired me to become a nail lady myself. I came back to the states to have my third baby and while I was awaiting the arrival of my little one I attended nail school part-time. It was in school that my instructor passed out a small packet of papers that described the dangers of the products being used in the discount nail shops. While reading these papers I ripped off the nails that I had on because I had them done at one of the discount salons! I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I always thought that the nail technicians did an excellent job because my nails never lifted, they never yellowed and it was inexpensive. What I had learned was that these shops were using a product that was from the dental industry. It was illegal to use it in the nail industry but it couldn’t be banned due to the fact that the dental industry used it. It was relatively cheap compared to the professional nail products and because it was meant for your teeth, this is the reason it never lifted nor yellowed. It made perfect sense to me now! I also read in the handout that it could cause serious health conditions if used over a prolonged period of time and the fumes are harmful as well. I’m very interested to see what information is available today. I graduated nail school in January 2000 so it’s been almost 10 years since I’ve read any information on this topic.
